YES! Association / Föreningen JA! is working on a new project for the exhibition The Work of Love, The Queer of Labor, at Franklin Street Works, Stamford, CT. The exhibition is curated by Yevgeniy Fiks and Olga Kopenkina and will be on view between May 21 – August 27, 2017.
The project has the title A New Spelling of a Street – A tribute to Audre Lorde. It is a work in process and includes; a letter, two photos, a printed map, excerpts from “Code of Ordinances, Stamford, CT. Chapter 21. FACILITIES; CITY-OWNED: Guidelines for naming and renaming of streets, parks and facilities”, copies from the book “Zami – A New Spelling of My Name” by Audre Lorde (1982), and the engagement of many of us. The aim of the project is to name / rename a street in South End, Stamford to Audre Lorde Street in honor of (with her own words) ”black lesbian feminist mother poet warrior“ Audre Lorde (1934-1992) who lived in Stamford during the 1950s.
Below you can read the letter “To Whom it May Concern” that explains more about the background and aspirations for the project:
As one component of “A New Spelling of a Street: A Tribute to Audre Lorde,” the movie “A Litany for Survival: The Life and Work of Audre Lorde” was screened on August 16th, 2017 at Ferguson Library South End Branch. Read about the event HERE
